We are opening our studio this fall for a new series of Fiber Art Workshops in Amsterdam. These sessions are designed as an introduction to traditions of slow making — practices rooted in patience, improvisation, and material storytelling.
Intro to Botanical Dye: Swatching Colors with Raven
This workshop is an invitation into the world of natural dyes. Together we’ll explore the theory and history of botanical dyes, uncover the different hues hidden within plants, and learn how to make the colors last. By the end, you’ll understand the effects of different mordants and take home your own collection of color swatches.
About the artist:
My name is Raven Kiss and I was born in Amsterdam and raised by my British mum. With a BFA and MA in the arts, I specialise in fibre practices in relation to ecology, bringing together a curiosity for materials and a love of slow, hands-on processes. I can often be found mucking about in my garden or experimenting with natural dyes at my studio. For me, making is about exploring how materials can carry meaning, and how craft can invite empathy for the environment. Whether through collecting waste material, colour foraging, or weaving. My practice and love for working with raw matter have been shaped by time living abroad in Japan, as well as summers spent in a remote part of France during my childhood and teenage years. Over the past three years, I’ve led workshops in papermaking, natural dyeing, and wool craft, and I love exploring new techniques and bringing them into my classes. I am also currently a dye instructor at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. I can’t wait to share my passion for material craft with you!
